Clarke reveals she had two life-threatening aneurysms, including a stroke caused by bleeding in her brain.
“Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke has revealed in a personal New Yorker essay that she suffered two life-threatening aneurysms, including a stroke caused by bleeding in her brain, after filming the first season of the hit HBO show.
The breakout role was her first real acting gig — she confesses feeling less like the conqueror that she grows into on the show, and more like the frightened girl that her character first appeared as in season one. “I was terrified. Terrified of the attention, terrified of a business I barely understood, terrified of trying to make good on the faith that the creators of ‘Thrones’ had put in me,” she said.
But her recovery wasn’t easy. She suffered aphasia, or a language impairment where she couldn’t speak clearly or express herself. At one point, she couldn’t tell the nurse her full name: Emilia Isobel Euphemia Rose Clarke. “But now, after keeping quiet all these years, I’m telling you the truth in full,” she writes. “Please believe me: I know that I am hardly unique, hardly alone. Countless people have suffered far worse, and with nothing like the care I was so lucky to receive.”
