Are there more GameOfThrones spinoffs in the works after HouseOfTheDragon? HBO exec Kara Buckley weighs in. 'We developed a lot of ideas, we were still developing a lot of ideas.' 👀
HBO Vice President of Original Programming Kara Buckley offers an update on whether there will be more Game of Thrones spinoffs following House of the Dragon. First premiering on HBO in 2011, Game of Thrones would become one of the network's biggest hits, acting as an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's fantasy book series, A Song of Ice and Fire.
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones in 2019 after a much-maligned final season, it was announced that the world of Game of Thrones would live on in the form of House of the Dragon, a prequel series set 200 years before the events of the main show. Based on Martin's book, Fire & Blood, the show will chronicle the events of the Targaryen civil war and a trailer for the series has already teased conflict between the show's many main characters.
"We developed a lot of ideas, we were still developing a lot of ideas, and I think we're really excited about the one that will air later this summer. But, we don't feel the need to make another one unless it feels really creatively exciting to us. That's my job, at least. And the team that I'm on, that's what we're told to focus on."
Although House of the Dragon seems to be the only spinoff that fans should expect anytime soon, it was reported that HBO spent $30 million on a pilot for another spinoff that was ultimately scrapped. In addition, Martin confirmed in March that at least three more Game of Thrones spinoffs were in development, including The Sea Snake, Ten Thousand Ships, and an adaptation of his Dunk and Egg novellas.
At its height, Game of Thrones was a global phenomenon and it seemed clear after the show's conclusion that HBO would be working quickly to churn out additional shows set in Martin's universe. In the years since, however, it would seem that HBO is narrowing its focus somewhat when it comes to further Game of Thrones spinoffs, working to ensure that anything that gets the green light has been fully developed.
