Sierra Canyon will host Mission Viejo in the Daily News Game of the Week.
Support our high school sports coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. That’s what Sierra Canyon is thinking ahead of Friday night’s game against a very good Mission Viejo team.that turned the lights out, literally. The power went out three times which added a dash of embarrassment to what was already a lopsided outcome on a special night.
On the flip side, we’ll see how Mission Viejo reacts to its first loss after falling to Long Beach Poly last week, 35-30. The Diablos were pegged to be the fourth-best team in Southern California after Mater Dei, St. John Bosco and Corona Centennial – and still could be – after what might be a loss that wakes up a sleeping giant.
Quarterback Kadin Semonza leads the Mission Viejo offense, and has a lot of weapons at his disposal on the ground with Chase Valousky and Isaiah Carreon and through the air with Jackson Holman and Mikey Matthews. The Diablos pose a challenge on their own, but there’s added weight to the game for Sierra Canyon, which will embark on Mission League play for the first time in program history against Bishop Amat on September 30.
Sierra Canyon’s quarterback situation is still a question mark. Wrighster and Alonzo Esparza have both been getting reps in each of the first three games. Wrighster has thrown three touchdowns in 23 passing attempts this year to Esparza’s four touchdowns in 63 attempts. However, Wrighster has thrown the same amount of interceptions as Esparza in his fewer attempts.
