Published: Feb. 19, 2026, 3:59 p.m.WILLIAMSPORT — The state Game Commission says it released incorrect information Wednesday and the fox that attacked two people in the Williamsport area had tested positive for rabies.

The mistake was realized after those who were attacked learned from the Department of Health in Lycoming County the fox had tested positive for rabies, she said. A woman walking her dog and a man on his house porch a short distance away were attacked by a fox just before 8 a.m. Feb. 11 in the area of Division Road and Mahaffey Lane in Old Lycoming Twp. Neither was bitten, although the man’s pants were ripped, Lycoming Regional Police Chief Christopher Kriner said.Police officers were able to locate the fox and euthanize it, Kriner said. The carcass was turned over to the commission to be tested for rabies. Anyone seeing a fox acting in an unusual manner should report it, Burkett said. There is more fox activity this time of year as it is mating season, Burkett explained.
