Officials said that the new York County facility will allow volunteers to maintain their equipment, undertake more extensive restoration projects, and shelter and preserve the work that has been done.

The Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society, operators of the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village at Muddy Creek Forks, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month to celebrate the completion of the new train shed and woodshop facility at 453 High Rock Road in Lower Chanceford Township, York County.

The Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society, operators of the Ma & Pa Railroad, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month to celebrate the new train shed and wood shop facility at 453 High Rock Road in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, near Airville. However, even though the train shed and woodshop were completed last year, the project itself is still ongoing. The Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society, operators of the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village at Muddy Creek Forks, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month to celebrate the completion of the new train shed at 453 High Rock Road in Lower Chanceford Township, York County. The new train shed and woodshop at Ma & Pa Railroad will provide shelter from the elements and an indoor workspace for restoration, maintenance, and storage of the society’s railroad equipment. “For 38 years since the Society’s founding, all work on large rail equipment has been done outdoors. The ability to work has been subject to weather and hindered by the need to keep work in progress under tarps. Also, all of the equipment has been constantly subjected to the ravages of the elements. Historic cars like Ma & Pa caboose #2007, which was fully restored in 2005, now need major work again due to 20 years of exposure,” the organization said in a news release. Officials said that in the new facility, volunteers will be able to maintain their equipment, undertake more extensive restoration projects, and shelter and preserve the work that has been done. Officials said these are “game-changing capabilities that will support the Society’s preservation efforts for years to come.”“The story of this facility, however, stretches over more than three decades. Construction of a restoration, maintenance, and storage building at High Rock was already envisioned in our Society’s first strategic plan, adopted in 1990. We were finally able to buy the property at High Rock in 2018, but we could not immediately begin to develop it because of the devastating flood that hit the Muddy Creek Valley in August of 2018,” Craig Sansonetti, president of the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society, said in an e-mail. “Recovery from the enormous damage to our railroad and property at Muddy Creek Forks required all of our resources for several years.” From 2020 to 2023, the nonprofit worked on site planning, track layout, building design, permitting, and the excavation required to prepare the site. Sansonetti said once the building was complete, the work was not finished. Volunteers began to build the railroad tracks inside the building and the approach tracks. “We have quite a capable track crew, but building over 1200 feet of track and three turnouts to access the building is an enormous task for volunteers,” he said,“Our track crew is continuing to work one day each week, and we expect to have the other two tracks operable this winter,” he said.
