Widening evacuation warnings and high-water rescues continued across Central and South Texas Thursday after days of relentless rain turned roads into rivers, stranded motorists and triggered dangerous flooding across the Texas Hill Country, prompting urgent warnings to move to higher ground. Emergency crews worked through the night rescuing people trapped by rising water as flood conditions worsened in communities stretching from Kerr County to Uvalde County.
Texas Game Wardens have participated in more than 40 rescues so far, most of them in Uvalde County, according to the The National Weather Service warned that a "large and deadly flood wave" was moving down the Guadalupe River — the same river devastated by catastrophic flooding last summer that killed more than 100 people, including dozens of children and counselors atIn Kerr County, Highway 39 remained closed Thursday morning due to flooding, while Interstate 10 was shut down in both directions near Comfort after a crash involving multiple tractor-trailers. One U.S. Geological Survey gauge less than 10 miles from Kerrville showed the river rising 32 feet in just four hours. Downstream near Center Point, the river climbed more than 30 feet between midnight and 4 a.m.said floodwaters could approach levels seen during the devastating July 4, 2025, floods, though current river levels remained below last year's historic crest.
Forecasters said 10 to 20 inches of rain had fallen across parts of the region over the previous two days, including as much as 8 inches in only two hours early Thursday. Additional rainfall was expected, with flood watches remaining in effect through Friday for many communities.
"There's no way into the city at this point in time. Rescues have been happening overnight," Uvalde police spokesperson Juli Alvarado said Thursday morning. She said emergency dispatchers remained in contact with people trapped in vehicles and rescue crews were reaching them as quickly as possible. Officials planned to deploy boats and helicopters as daylight improved rescue conditions.remained in effect for parts of Uvalde County, where officials warned the Leona River would continue rising.
Residents along the river were urged to move to higher ground immediately.officials said swift-water rescue teams from multiple agencies had been deployed across the region and warned residents never to drive around barricades or through flooded roads.
"This is a life-threatening weather event," officials said, urging Texans to stay off roadways unless absolutely necessary. The flooding also forced numerous road closures throughout the Hill Country, including in Kerr County, where authorities asked residents to avoid travel and monitor changing conditions. Farther east, Boerne officials warned residents in several neighborhoods to evacuate voluntarily or prepare to shelter in place as rapidly rising water submerged streets and stranded motorists.
City spokesperson Chris Shadrock said the city's busiest intersection was "completely underwater" while high-water rescues continued.
"This is a life-threatening weather event. I don't want to mince words about how serious this situation is," Shadrock said, noting water was rising in areas that typically do not flood. Authorities rescued a woman after her vehicle was swept off River Road by the swollen Cibolo Creek, while about 20 vehicles became trapped at a nearby gas station as surrounding streets flooded.
As of Wednesday evening, more than six million Texans across 57 counties were under flood watches, with many expected to remain in effect through Friday. Forecasters warned the greatest flood threat remained across areas west of San Antonio and throughout the Texas Hill Country, where additional heavy rain could rapidly worsen already dangerous conditions. A man was arrested and is facing 32 felony charges after he allegedly assaulted, raped, and kidnapped a woman on MountTimpanogos.
