“He looks great. He’s a big, strong gelding, and he’s ready to rock and roll on Saturday’s Derby Day,” she says. “Henry said he had a 40th birthday coming up and wants a Derby as a present. In Sydney, Rosehill racecourse hosts the Golden Eagle.

The Waller-trained Riff Rocket, meanwhile, is favourite for the Derby. Despite his domination of recent Australian racing, Waller has not tasted success in the Derby. Riff Rocket is owned by Sydney businesswoman Debbie Kepitis,Another in the mix is Apulia, the three-year-old bay colt trained by Ben Hayes and his father David, who had not planned to return from Hong Kong for the race until his horse drew barrier three.

The 2500-metre start at Flemington, which is only just before the winning post, has a short run to a sharp first turn.
