A House Ethics Committee report revealed substantial evidence against former Congressman Matt Gaetz, alleging violations of House rules including statutory rape, leading to questions about his political future.
The future of former Congressman Matt Gaetz is uncertain following a House Ethics Committee report alleging various ethical and potential criminal offenses, including statutory rape . The report, released on Monday, stated that the committee found substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House rules prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape , illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress.
Gaetz resigned from Congress shortly after being nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as U.S. attorney general last month. While the report's release was temporarily halted by Gaetz's resignation, the allegations cast doubt on his Senate confirmation for Trump's Cabinet, ultimately leading to his withdrawal one week after the nomination. Although Gaetz could face potential criminal and civil liabilities related to the allegations, he remains a popular figure among MAGA Republicans and, at 42 years old, could have a long political career ahead. Gaetz stated at a Turning Point USA event in Arizona on Sunday that he might run for the 2026 Florida gubernatorial election, become a special counsel to pursue his former House colleagues, or run for the soon-to-be-vacant Florida U.S. Senate seat currently held by Marco Rubio, Trump's nominee for U.S. secretary of state. He also mentioned that some, including his friend Steve Bannon, have suggested his return to the House of Representatives on January 3rd. Gaetz, however, clarified that he is currently enjoying his time outside of Congress. Since Gaetz is no longer a U.S. House member, he cannot be punished for any ethical violations within the chamber
