Two weeks ago, Mr Xi was conspicuously present at the annual leaders summit of the BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – in Johannesburg, where it was agreed to admit six new developing nations to the alternative multipolar forum that seeks to counter the West-led global order symbolised by the G20.
The rise of Donald Trump’s right-wing “America first” populism has pushed the US out of Asia’s biggest free trade agreement, with the Democrats showing no interest for domestic political reasons in rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Scott Morrison has reportedly warned the Coalition party room that by agreeing to the visit, Mr Albanese is too soft on pushing to remove the trade bans imposed to punish Australia for leading the global pushback against China.
