Patrick Bateman on the couch in American Psycho
A brand-new update on FX's The Shards, based on American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis' 2023 novel, has just been revealed, including a release window. During an interview with Variety, producer Brad Simpson revealed that The Shards will premiere on FX"later in the summer.
" He explained that HBO originally optioned the book, but the rights eventually became available, and FX"pounced on it." Multi-hyphenate TV creator Ryan Murphy, who is the showrunner on the small-screen adaptation,"knew how much we loved it and so brought us on to it." Simpson went on to say that the cast, which includes Kaia Gerber, Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, Graham Campbell, Hayes Warner, and Wes Bentley, is"incredibly young" and will surprise everyone when they appear on the screen. The producer added that The Shards has an American Gigolo vibe since it takes place in the 1980s. The music will also be reminiscent of what moviegoers heard in American Gigolo from composer Giorgio Moroder, where the project is"defined by a mood, by the music of the time, by the clothes of the time." "It’s based on a book by Bret Easton Ellis, who is a touchstone for us, between Less Than Zero and American Psycho. He’d written a book called The Shards, set in 1981. It’s sort of like Less than Zero but if there were serial killers and murders happening, a coming-of-age piece. It’s a piece that, like many of these things, is defined by a mood, by the music of the time, by the clothes of the time, and by teenagers who feel like adults and are acting like adults but aren’t yet adults yet. And it was a book that HBO had originally optioned. had done it as a podcast, and we were incredibly jealous of it. And when it became free, we pounced on it. Ryan got it and knew how much we loved it and so brought us on to it. And it’s got an incredible young cast and is, I think, going to be something that, when it comes on later in the summer, is surprising to everybody, but it has all the great elements of people who’ve been looking for that sort of Giorgio Moroder, American Gigolo vibe of the teenagers of the early ‘80s. It delivers on all of those things." Ellis is best known for writing the 1991 novel American Psycho, which was turned into a film less than a decade later starring Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Bill Sage, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto and Willem Dafoe. After writing four other books, Ellis then published The Shards, which tells a fictionalized version of his high school senior year. The author utilized a unique release strategy; he first released it as an audiobook on Patreon over the course of one year before publishing the physical book in 2023. Ellis is one of the producers of FX's adaptation alongside Murphy, Max Winkler, Nick Hall, Kathleen McCaffrey and Brian Young. Murphy has a years-long relationship with FX, having created and produced series like Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud, Pose, American Sports Story, Grotesquerie, The Beauty and, most recently, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, the latter of which was also produced by Simpson. Love Story just aired its finale on March 26, concluding the on-screen interpretation of JFK Jr. and Bessette's whirlwind public relationship, which ended in tragedy. It's been a buzz-worthy series for the network on social media, with younger generations discovering these two public figures for the first time and leaning into the nostalgia of 1990s fashion. Now Murphy, Simpson and the American Psycho author are setting their sights on The Shards, which began filming last fall. A premiere date hasn't been announced yet, but as the latter producer revealed, fans should expect the show to premiere sometime over the summer. 35 8.5/10 8/10 American Psycho 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed R Crime Documentary Drama Thriller Release Date April 14, 2000 Runtime 101 minutes Director Mary Harron Writers Bret Easton Ellis, Mary Harron, Guinevere Turner Cast See All
