The accumulation of susceptible populations for respiratory infectious diseases (RIDs) when COVID-19-targeted non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were in place might pose a greater risk of futu...
16 R. E. Baker, S. W. Park, W. Yang, G. A. Vecchi, C. J. E. Metcalf, and B. T. Grenfell, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A.We found that, besides influenza and RSV, other types of RIDs could also rebound after lifting up of the COVID-19 targeted NPIs. The new quantitative analyses of the common endemic respiratory diseases could inform the local disease control and prevention to take all the RIDs into consideration for more comprehensive preparedness and resource management.
Three practical implications can be drawn from this study. First, most of the RIDs will come back on a large scale soon after the relaxation of the COVID-19 targeted NPIs. Different RIDs have different medication treatment and prevention strategies, then we need to prepare corresponding medical resources in advance. Second, sufficient hospital beds for vulnerable populations should be ensured in the re-opening process.
Caution is needed in interpreting the results. First, our study only considers infections within Hong Kong. We didn't take into account the imported cases of RIDs. After the border is reopened in Hong Kong and other countries/regions, the timing and scale of RID outbreak could be affected by the international travel.
