Future of more than 100 Blackburn graves secured after 'alarming' sale of heritage-listed chapel
The future of more than 100 graves in Blackburn has been secured after a heritage-listed chapel was sold to become a private house.
She contacted the Lancashire Telegraph with her concerns and now Rev Stuart Smith, the superintendent minister for the West Pennine Moors Circuit, has given an assurance that no graves will be moved. The chapel was built in 1828 and extended and upgraded several times later in the 19th Century.The burial ground was the main graveyard for non-conformist churches in Blackburn and the surrounding area until the opening of the municipal Pleasington Cemetery. It contains hundreds of graves.
“The burial ground was not part of the sale. It remains the property of the Methodist Church. Planning permission was granted for a change of use from a place of worship to a dwelling house. “Following consultation, it became clear that it would not be appropriate to grant permission to move grave furniture. No purchaser has requested permissions. The Methodist church will protect and look after the graves. There are no plans to move them
