The future of one of Stirling’s most historic city centre buildings is to be assessed after a blaze at the weekend.

Firefighters rushed to the scene at derelict B-listed Langgarth House, in the grounds of Stirling Council’s headquarters at Viewforth, around 5.50pm on Saturday.

Stirling MP Alyn Smith described the fire as a “sad sight” and also thanked police and firefighters who attended. Confirming the arrests, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Two 16-year-old males have been arrested and charged in connection with a fire at an abandoned building in Stirling.“It was extinguished and no one was injured.Click here for more news and sport from the Stirling area.

Langgarth was labelled ‘at risk’ in 2012, but while monitored by the council since, the uncertainty of future use of the wider Viewforth site - including years discussing the controversial and now defunct Viewforth Link Road - hindered progress in successfully securing any potential new owners or leaseholders.

From a political perspective, local politicians were quick to engage in a blame game over the wider fortunes of the Langgarth building – which has lain derelict for 15 years.
