Recent numbers show the government is currently spending £8 billion to help support 6.3 million furloughed workers across Britain.
Analysis released on Tuesday shows that 50% of British adults are now receiving some sort of funding from the state, as millions across the country struggle amid the pandemic.Nearly two million people have applied for Universal Credit since Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the UK lockdown in March.
However, the Chancellor recently highlighted concerns that the furlough scheme could soon cost the country the same as the NHS, at approximately £11 billion a month. ‘As some scenarios have suggested, we are potentially spending as much on the furlough scheme as we do on the NHS, for example. Clearly that is not a sustainable situation.’
