Blackburn parents of SEN children 'in complete limbo' in row over free bus places and council withdraws 'vital' service
Parents say they have been left in limbo after discovering their children with special educational needs will not receive a free school bus place - despite believing they should be entitled to one.
As a result of the new reduced service and a substantial increase in the cost, many parents with SEN children have questioned Blackburn with Darwen Council about their eligibility for a free space on the bus.
She told LancsLive: "Even my son's paediatrician said that he would not be safe on public transport, because he needs that continuity. The whole thing has made me feel a bit sick." "When I picked him up from school it was like he had the weight of the world on him and wanted to know if he had a place and I was able to tell him that he did." The other issue lies with the fact that the mum and her husband both work full-time and are unable to drop off or pick up their son at a certain time and have therefore relied upon the bus service as a safe, continuous and reliable form of transportation.
After several phone calls and emails, they were informed they needed an EHCP, otherwise the Council were unable to help. However, just like many other parents, her child does not have such a plan, despite living with Autism and Tourette's, but is lucky enough to not need any extra educational support.
Rick Moore is the Deputy Chairman of Blackburn Conservatives and has stated that he is "beyond disgusted" with the situation. Councillor Rick spoke with one parent who expressed their anger towards the Council, stating: "Refusing to help children with SEN access their education is just shows this council is morally bankrupt."
