While widespread severe weather isn’t expected this afternoon, parts of northern and central Illinois could potentially see funnel clouds, landspouts or even tornadoes. According to a special weather statement from the National Weather Service, atmospheric conditions are considered “favorable” for the development of funnel clouds in parts of central Illinois, including LaSalle and Iroquois counties.
In addition, landspouts are also possible, and if storms continue to strengthen in the afternoon hours, isolated brief supercell tornadoes are possible, according to the alert. According to officials, funnel clouds that develop typically only protrude a few hundred feet from their parent clouds, spinning in the air and lasting only for a few minutes. If conditions intensify however, there is a possibility of landspouts forming within the storms. Landspouts, according to the National Weather Service, differ from tornadoes in that they don’t form within supercell thunderstorms, and aren’t associated with wall clouds. In most cases, landspouts are generally weak and cause little-to-no damage, but occasionally they can cause damage if they are long-lasting or stronger in nature. Most of the Chicago area is expected to remain dry during the afternoon hours, though some isolated showers and perhaps a storm or two are possible, according to forecast models.More showers and storms could form on Monday afternoon, and hotter temperatures are expected later this week, with heat indices soaring above 105 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
