Veteran lawmaker 'delighted in holding court beside working men and working women,' family says.
, a fiery fixture in Washington who represented New Jersey for nearly three decades, will be laid to rest next week following services in Paterson, the city where the 87-year-old congressman lived his entire life, his family said.
A viewing is scheduled for Tues., Aug. 27 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson.“Bill was friends with Presidents. He ate with Prime Ministers. He drank with Premiers,” his family wrote in his obituary. “But he was happiest talking with neighbors in North Jersey. He delighted in holding court beside working men and working women.”
“At every stage of his Congressional career, he stood up for our neighbors by defending access to reproductive health care, keeping our communities safe from gun violence, supporting our law enforcement officers and first responders, protecting our natural wonders — like Paterson’s Great Falls — and so much more,” Murphy said in a statement.
In lieu of flowers, his family requested donations to the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, Eva’s Village of Paterson, or the Kessler Foundation.
