A funeral procession and memorial service has been set for Sept. 21 to honor San Diego police Officer Austin Machitar, who died last month in the line of duty, officials said Thursday. The procession is scheduled to leave from Snapdragon Stadium next Saturday at 7:45 a.
m. and head east on Friars Road. The procession will continue south onto Interstate 15 and then east on Interstate 8.Officials said there are several overpasses along the route for the community to view the procession as it drives by. The vehicles will then exit on Greenfield Drive and head toward Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon for a 10 a.m. memorial service that is open to the public.Officials said traffic will be impacted along the freeway between Snapdragon Stadium and Greenfield Drive from 7:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.Machitar, 30, died after a teen driver who was fleeing other officers crashed into his patrol vehicle shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Doliva Drive.
