$4.5 million in funds that Fairbanks Area Surface Transportation Planning had allocated for improvements to access at Pearl Creek Elementary School may head to other projects in the community.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Fairbanks Area Surface Transportation Planning has allocated $4.5 million to improve access at Pearl Creek Elementary School which may be diverted to other projects in the community following the closure announcement.
The allocated funding would have gone toward creating a new driveway at the school to alleviate congestion, as well as adding car plugins and repaving the parking lots. Among the projects being considered is the construction of a compressed natural gas filling station on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus so that the university can change out its diesel bus fleet.
“So we’re not shutting the project down entirely at this time, but we are looking for, in the event that the school is closed and the building’s not reused, where can we invest that funding,” he said.
