Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has broken his silence on Paul Keating’s controversial National Press Club rant, declaring the Labor stalwart’s stinging attacks “diminish him”.
Mr Keating took the bold step on Wednesday to blast the government’s decision to saddle up with the United States and the United Kingdom to procure nuclear submarines, labelling AUKUS the “worst international decision” by a Labor government since conscription more than 100 years ago.
“I fundamentally disagree with his view, and I disagree with his attitude towards the state of the world in 2023,” Mr Albanese told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell on Thursday. But in the wake of the unveiling of the $368 billion nuclear submarine program, Mr Albanese has been forced to clean up Mr Keating’s fiery rebuke of the alliance.
“Well, I think that people like President Biden, look towards Australia’s leadership, and my relationship with him, can’t be stronger. Defence spending will increase to 0.15 per cent of GDP on average from 2026-27 every year to pay for the submarines.

‘No one’ was off limits in Paul Keating’s ‘stinging Press Club address’ on AUKUSFormer prime minister Paul Keating today “unleashed” on the Labor Party, journalists, Joe Biden, America, the British Prime Minister and Anthony Albanese in a “stinging Press Club address”, says Sky News host Sharri Markson. “No one was off limits in Keating's speech which attacked Australia over the AUKUS deal announced yesterday by Albanese, Biden and Sunak – he dubbed it the Kabuki show,' Ms Markson said. “He said it was the worst international decision by an Australian Labor government in more than a century. Keating claims China has never wanted to attack us and never will.' Ms Markson said Mr Keating’s performance today reminds us why he’s the “strongest orator of our time” – but on China, he was “utterly inconsistent, completely hypocritical and showed questionable logic”. “And he deliberately ignored China's egregious human rights atrocities, its coercive conduct and its aggressive military build-up – the very actions that have forced Australia into a higher embrace with the United States and Britain.”
