GOP members criticize 'watered down' text which failed to mention congresswoman Ilhan Omar by name.
The House of Representatives have overwhelmingly passed a resolution condemning hatred and intolerance, including anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim discrimination, in the wake of comments made by Democrat congresswoman Ilhan Omar.The text was originally going to only mention anti-Semitism, which was seen as a direct rebuke of Omar’s recent comments. It was later amended to include anti-Muslim discrimination and “bigotry against minorities as hateful expressions.
“The double standard motivating this decision by the Speaker and the moral equivalency filling this watered down text is spineless and disgusting.” Texas Representative Louie Gohmert said he voted against the resolution as not fully condemning anti-Semitic remarks “is the way a holocaust begins.” In a joint statement following the vote, Omar and fellow Democrat representatives Rashida Tlaib and Andre Carson praised the passing of the resolution.
