Two men, Christian Rad and Vasile Ostas, admitted to the 2003 murder of French salesman Philippe Charuel after being apprehended in Spain after over two decades on the run.
Two men confessed to the brutal murder of a French salesman in 2003 after evading justice for over two decades. Philippe Charuel's body was discovered in a ditch near Gondreville, eastern France , in February 2003. Investigations revealed that Charuel had been approached by two young prostitutes who claimed he had harassed them while leaving a bar in Nancy. He was then abducted by two men, later identified as Christian Rad and Vasile Ostas, who forced him into a black BMW.
After nearly 22 years on the run, Rad and Ostas were apprehended in August 2023 near Barcelona, Spain. They had been living in Catalonia under false identities for approximately 20 years. Rad, who fathered two children, worked as a concierge in a luxury hotel, while Ostas, a Romanian national, secured employment as a security guard. Ostas' lawyer, Elénore Dupleix, confirmed that her client had admitted to the facts and expressed remorse multiple times during the court proceedings. Rad admitted to striking Charuel, stating he was deeply affected by the violence and expressing regret for the victim's family. Charuel was characterized as a man with no criminal history who frequented nightclubs, had recently separated from his wife, and was the father of a young child. His body bore 20 abdominal injuries, broken ribs, and numerous facial wounds, including a fractured jaw and missing teeth, according to presiding judge Therese Diligent. The verdict in the case is expected on Friday.
