Prosecutors accused him of plotting with Malaysian businessman Jho Low to influence the administrations of Barack Obama and Donald TrumpMichel was accused of funnelling money from a now-fugitive Malaysian financier through straw donors to Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign, then trying to halt a Justice Department investigation and influence an extradition case on behalf of China under the Trump administration.

A jury in a Washington DC federal court found him guilty of all 10 counts on Wednesday local time, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.Prosecutors accused Michel of plotting with Malaysian businessman Jho Low to attempt to influence the administrations of presidents Mr Obama and Mr Trump.

Michel's lawyer David Kenner told reporters outside the courthouse he was "extremely disappointed" by the verdict, but remained hopeful the charges could be dismissed by the judge.US District judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly set deadlines for both parties to file briefs on a number of post-trial motions, including a request for a judgement of acquittal, that extend into July.

"I remain enormously confident that this case is not over, and that we will ultimately prevail," Mr Kenner added.Michel first met the Malaysian financier in 2006 when Mr Low was spending large sums of money and meeting with the likes of Paris Hilton.
