With gas prices up sharply since last week, visitors arriving in Gulf Shores for spring break say the cost is affecting their travel budgets — though beaches remained packed Wednesday afternoon

) - With gas prices up sharply since last week, visitors arriving in Gulf Shores for spring break say the cost is affecting their travel budgets — though beaches remained packed Wednesday afternoon. Travelers who made the long drive to the coast said the price increases are being felt at the pump and beyond.

Amiyah Hicks, a visitor in Gulf Shores, said the climb is adding up fast. “It’s just too much,” Hicks said. “You gotta put too much money in the tank now cause it’s just going up.”Across Baldwin County, gas for under three dollars a gallon has become difficult to find. JD Osgood, who drove to Gulf Shores for the break, said he noticed lighter-than-expected traffic on the way down and believes higher prices could keep some travelers home. “I was surprised how light the traffic was coming down and we’ll see how it is over the next couple of weeks but I wouldn’t be surprised if it inhibits some folks from travel,” Osgood said. Out-of-state license plates were visible up and down the strip Wednesday, with some tourists traveling hundreds of miles to reach the beach.According to AAA, the current price increase is not yet being directly tied to supply-chain disruptions. Officials say some stations are raising prices now in anticipation of wholesale costs climbing. Misty Stubblefield, a truck driver visiting Gulf Shores, said she is familiar with fuel price swings and expects the current spike to be temporary. “I’m actually a truck driver so I’m used to dealing with it, on the diesel end, but then we did the five dollars and more and I think that’s a lot of price gouging on that but I believe it’ll drop,” Stubblefield said. “I say give it a couple months and it’ll be back down to normal.”Not all travelers are feeling the pinch. Gerard Fink, visiting from the Netherlands, said fuel costs in Gulf Shores are still well below what he pays at home. “We’re from the Netherlands and the gas prices there are at least twice as high as they are here so we are actually pretty happy whenever I put gas in my tank,” Fink said. It remains unclear when prices will ease or how high they could climb before they do. Demand has not slowed, and pumps across the area were busy Wednesday.UPDATE: Coast Guard finds overdue boat; still searching for missing fisherman Teacher’s wife wants charges dropped against students after sheriff says he was killed in prank gone wrongHow about: CVS Rolls out AI Health Platform, Minecraft Updates, and New Apple Emojis
