Frumpy Mom columnist Marla Jo Fisher reveals the joys of living with a cat
Right now, I’m looking at a photo of my 25-year-old son, Cheetah Boy. He sent me this because it illustrates a fundamental principle that has invaded our home: Our cat, Cairo, is sitting on his head.
Still, this was certainly not my intention when I went to the animal shelter a year ago, to look at a Siamese cat I’d seen online that was available for adoption. All I remember about the cat Tolstoy is that he had this terrifying habit of climbing onto the top of the refrigerator and then launching himself onto my back when I least expected it.Years later, I had another cat who also made me scream after he developed the hobby of climbing up on my headboard and jumping forcefully onto my solar plexus while I was sound asleep.This is why some people hate cats.
This is what we’ve been forced to do: 1. Slowly start opening the door. 2. Stick foot out to block the cat while peering cautiously into the house to see if he’s there. 3. If he is attempting to dart out, yell “No!” and stamp your foot to emphasize that he’s to get back from the door. Then they charge you $400 and make you fill out massive amounts of paperwork, including the promise that the animal will sleep on velvet cushions and be treated like royalty.As soon as I saw that our local shelter had a Siamese, I grabbed my son and we went over to meet him. In a room full of cages, this beast was so happy to get our attention that he purred loudly and practically begged us to take him home, making what was in my mind an implied promise to be an affectionate kitty.
