My children are athletic, especially my son. This is primarily because I am not.If you’ve ever raised kids, you know that fierce determination to give them all the things that your childhood self never received.
But I wouldn’t have wanted to join anyway, because I was – and continue to be – a klutz of spectacular aplomb.Recently, I tripped over my own walking cane in the lobby of our building and fell with a plop on the floor. I was absolutely fine, but I couldn’t get up by myself, so our big boss – the editor of the entire paper chain – stopped to haul my ample carcass up off the floor.
My sort-of-friends could climb a chain-link fence in nanoseconds. I just fell flat on my back and, after I caught my breath, staggered home to finish reading “Jane Eyre.” My son, Cheetah Boy, who was probably around seven at the time, complained bitterly that he didn’t want to do it.
