The Frozen Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant in Downtown Cleveland has permanently shut down due to a surge in criminal activity. City officials, citing numerous police calls and multiple shootings, worked to close the establishment, which they described as a source of public safety concerns.
A notorious downtown Cleveland bar, the Frozen Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant, has permanently closed its doors after a string of violent incidents. Cleveland Law Director Mark Griffin, who spearheaded the closure, stated that the establishment was a focal point for crime and that the city was committed to eradicating criminal activity from the area. According to Griffin, police were called to the bar at least 10 times last year alone, culminating in a fatal shooting in December 2024.
Body camera footage obtained by News 5 shows officers responding to a 911 call reporting a shooting outside the bar, where a 24-year-old man was killed. Earlier that year, in April, another shooting occurred inside the bar, injuring two people.Griffin emphasized the city's all-encompassing approach to safety, collaborating with various departments, including police, fire, and health, to shut down the daiquiri bar. He stressed that the city supports legitimate businesses while working to address those that contribute to criminal activity.James Cleveland, the owner of the Frozen Daiquiri Bar, confirmed the closure in an Instagram post, sharing an email exchange he had with the city in December, where he expressed willingness to make changes and agree on a closing date. He also defended his business, stating that recent news reports did not accurately reflect its operations and that the violence was directed at an individual rather than the establishment itself. Cleveland announced that he is currently selling his business and encouraged interested parties to contact him.
