'Frozen II' opened with $130 million via its North American debut and $358 million worldwide this past weekend
, but A) it had the first $100 million-plus opening for a toon outside of summer and B) its 3.11x weekend multiplier was unusually leggy for a mega-opener.
Family-targeted animated features tend to be leggier on opening weekend compared to live-action biggies, mostly because kids and families wait until Saturday and Sunday to catch those kid-friendly matinees. Stereotypically speaking, you didn’t have a lot of child-free adults taking in a hot date night showing ofthat would open with $17 million on Friday and end up with a $69 million opening weekend. The exception to this were the very biggest toon openers of all time.
If Disney was trading Thanksgiving for the pre-Thanksgiving weekend for a massive Fri-Sun frame, they more-or-less got that. I could wine that the sequel todidn’t score a blow-out opening is mostly about modern theatrical moviegoing than any issues with the movie itself. Point being,earned the biggest non-summer animated launch and the third-biggest, sans inflation, animated opening ever.
