Whether you’re a “Frozen” rookie or a parent who’s seen it 500 times with the kids, here’s a refresher as to where our main characters have been and where they’re going in the new sequel.
USA TODAYFor the first time in forever – or what might feel like it for the “Frozen” faithful – there’s another big-screen musical adventure for the denizens of Arendelle.
For the anticipated theatrical sequel – only the fourth for Disney’s legendary animation studio – transformation and evolution were integral, as well as a meaningful story that connected both movies. “We wanted to have something important that you could take away when you left the theater, something that helped change your life or perspective or sat with you," Bell says.
“Frozen 2” finds Elsa ensconced as queen of Arendelle a few years after finally accepting her abilities as a gift rather than a curse. She was “often apologizing for her power and being fearful that she was going to endanger the people around her,” Menzel says. But Elsa needs those super-skills more than ever when she and her loved ones venture into a newly discovered enchanted forest after hearing a mysterious, beckoning melody.
Bell loves that the filmmakers tackled Anna’s co-dependency as well as “put her in situations that made her incredibly uncomfortable and forced her to focus on herself. Elsa had a lot of growth in the first one, discovering who she is and not being afraid of what she has inside. Anna didn't have that story line: She was of service to her sister and that's beautiful. But I was incredibly excited to see Anna go deeper and see what she does when she's alone.
