Front Row Motorsports (FRM) has made a significant announcement about its expansion. They have acquired a third charter from Stewart-Haas Racing, enabling them to field a third full-time entry in the NASCAR Cup Series starting in 2025. Jerry Freeze, FRM's general manager, stated that details regarding the new driver lineup, car number, and additional partners will be revealed soon. This expansion comes amidst an ongoing antitrust lawsuit filed by FRM and 23XI Racing against NASCAR .
The lawsuit alleges that NASCAR's regulations and market control create a monopoly that stifles competition. FRM and 23XI Racing were granted a preliminary injunction allowing them to finalize charter agreements for the 2025 season. This is crucial as it prevents potential harm like losing driver contracts if they were not recognized as charter teams during the legal proceedings. NASCAR plans to appeal the injunction, arguing that their current system promotes competition and benefits sponsors, fans, and broadcasters. While the legal battle continues, NASCAR maintains the fairness of its business model. Although the appeal timeline is unclear, FRM is already preparing for the new team by acquiring parts, forming a new team structure, and expanding their staff. Freeze commented in May 2024 that it is beneficial to announce the news now as they have a significant amount of work to do to prepare the new team
