Ramirez sailed through Wednesday's hearing and is on a clear path to confirmation, likely this summer.
Ramirez would be the first Latina on the conservative 5th Circuit, which handles appeals from Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
“Her responses to senators’ questions were clear and thorough and showed her strong command of federal substantive and procedural law and of the types of appeals that she will resolve on the Fifth Circuit,” Tobias said. “She displayed all of the critical attributes of a federal appellate judge: intelligence, diligence, character, independence, and measured judicial temperament.”Cornyn introduced Ramirez at the hearing by running through her life and career.
Biden announced their nominations together last month, touting them as part of his effort to increase diversity on the federal bench. Kennedy posed only a couple of queries to Ramirez, about the importance of a justice system blind to race, which she easily handled.
