Polling suggests that measures to strengthen worker rights are popular with the public

And in each area, what’s notable is that polling suggests that the measures are popular with the public. A new Opinium poll shows 67 per cent support all workers having a right to protection from unfair dismissal from day one, rather than waiting two years. Crucially, the idea is backed by 61 per cent of Conservative 2019 voters. Just 16 per cent oppose it.

Support for worker rights among 2019 Tory voters shouldn’t be a revelation, because that was the year that Boris Johnson persuaded many working class, former Labour voters to switch to the Conservatives in places like the “Red Wall”. Like many of Johnson’s promises, life somehow got in the way and a promised employment Bill never saw the light of day. Manifesto promises of flexible working were ditched too.

In many cases, the strikes “worked” because they delivered higher pay, albeit in one-off bonuses in some cases. And while the public’s patience with stoppages can snap if pushed too far, the cost of living crisis has prompted solidarity and sympathy rather than condemnation.
