Walker, now a senior at Houston Academy, suffered a major setback during her sophomore year during a round-off warmup.

DOTHAN, Ala. - For eight years, Kaylee Beth Walker has called the gym home. It’s where she’s grown not only as a gymnast, but as a person. But her senior season — the one she worked toward for so long — almost never happened.

Walker, now a senior at Houston Academy, suffered a major setback during her sophomore year when she rolled her ankle during a round-off warmup. What initially seemed like a minor injury quickly turned into something more serious. “It was getting better, but it got to the point where I had to get surgery because my ligaments weren’t healing the way they were supposed to,” Walker said. She underwent tightrope surgery to stabilize the joint, forcing her out of competition for six months — an eternity for a gymnast. Her coach, Jarrett Ezzell, remembers just how difficult that moment was. “It’s heartbreaking because it happened at a time when she was just about to come out of her shell skill-wise,” Ezzell said. “You can’t really do any of that with an injured ankle. It turned out to be a serious issue.” Even when she couldn’t compete, Walker never stayed away. She showed up to the gym in a boot, doing what she could, leaning on her teammates for support. “I’d come to the gym, see my friends, do some ankle exercises — but just them cheering me on ― mentally, they lifted my spirits every day,” she said. Those friendships became her motivation to push through the long recovery process. She never let herself believe her journey was over.“She wanted to come back — and she did. And she came back maybe even stronger than she was before,” she said. That comeback didn’t just heal her physically — it transformed her confidence. Once shy and hesitant, Walker has grown into a leader both on and off the floor. “We had to walk her out to the floor for tryouts,” her mom said. “And now she just gets out there. It’s really boosted her confidence everywhere.”“She’s gone from being that kid in the back of the line to someone who doesn’t mind stepping to the front,” he said. “She’s come out of her shell a lot — and gymnastics does that for you.” Now the only senior on the team, Walker has embraced her role as captain. She says her teammates have played a major role in helping her become who she is today. “My friends here have helped me a lot. They’ve helped me gain confidence, and I just feel so much more like myself around them,” she said. Her favorite event is floor — a place where her personality shines just as much as her skills. It’s also where her journey has come full circle. Balance, she says, isn’t just about staying steady on a beam — it’s about finding a way to stand back up after you fall. And she has done exactly that. This weekend, Walker will compete at the state meet for the eighth time, with hopes of qualifying for regionals for the first time in her career. “If you truly love something, you will find a way,” she said. “It might not be the most perfect path, but it will be a path that you made.” After graduation, she plans to attend the University of South Alabama to study elementary education. But before she moves on, she knows what she’ll miss most: her teammates. In Dothan, her story is one of resilience, growth and the kind of confidence that can only come from getting back up — no matter how hard the fall.
