Dave the Diver has made quite the splash since its launch, offering a combination of sea exploration, creature catching, and restaurant management in one satisfying package. The title is the debut release from MINTROCKET, a division of developer Nexon, the company behind games like MapleStory. The underwater fishing RPG sees players both supplying fish to a restaurant and running the establishment themselves, all while investigating the mysterious area known as the Blue Hole.
Jaeho Hwang: Underwater exploration is not fast-paced, and your playtime can vary depending on how much oxygen you have. However, the sushi restaurant is the exact opposite; it has a time limit and is very busy, which leads to hectic play. We wanted to create a game with two different paces, just like the repeatably switching rhythm from the song "By The Way" by Red Hot Chili Peppers, which worked very well.
How was the aesthetic style of the game chosen? Was there a clear idea of what the team wanted it to be from the beginning? Jaeho Hwang: The initial idea was to set the ocean as a "dungeon" and make a game where you can earn money by selling items from the dungeon, similar to Taloon's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon, which I enjoyed as a kid. I thought the ocean, as depicted in many games and movies, was a fantastic dungeon with beauty, terror, and tons of resources to loot.
The game has seen incredible success and critical reception both in early access and after its complete launch. What is it about Dave the Diver that you think has made it resonate with so many players?
