A former inmate turned cannabis entrepreneur is experiencing a remarkable turnaround, with his marijuana dispensary generating millions in sales.
The owner of a marijuana dispensary in New York City is enjoying significant financial success after his business generated approximately $7 million in sales last year. This achievement comes almost two decades after he was imprisoned for selling weed. Coss Marte, the founder and CEO of ConBud, attributes his success to his unwavering dedication and hard work.
Marte, who was convicted of drug offenses in 2009 and served a seven-year prison sentence, now projects his business will bring in $12 million this year, with a monthly profit of $800,000. Marte's dispensary, located in Manhattan's Lower East Side, is the first in the city to sell recreational cannabis in this area. It offers a variety of cannabis products, with prices ranging from $10 to $700. Marte's conviction was expunged in 2021 when New York legalized adult-use marijuana. He seized the opportunity, announcing that entrepreneurs with previous cannabis convictions could apply for recreational marijuana licenses. Marte opened his first dispensary in October 2023 and has since expanded his business to The Bronx. He acknowledges that meeting the legal requirements for obtaining a license involved demonstrating two years of net profit and a previous conviction. During his four-year prison sentence at Greene Correctional Facility, Marte received a warning from a doctor that he was at risk of dying within a few years if he didn't prioritize his health. Marte responded by losing 70 pounds and eventually transformed his workout routine into a successful business
