It was at the start of the 2001/02 that the American manufacturers took over from Reebok in what was initially a five-year deal that has since eventually stretched over two decades. At the time, Nike had only been in the country for six years and their partnership with Chiefs came at a time when they were also involved with the Springboks after having kitted AmaZulu and Moroka Swallows.

Nike’s relationship with Chiefs started with Muhsin Ertugral in charge in a season in which Rowen Fernandez, Stanton Fredericks, Kenny Niemach, Jose Macamo, Shaun Permall, Rodney Thobejane, Rene Richards and the returning Lucky Maselesele highlighted the new arrivals before Tinashe Nengomasha and Kelvin Mushangazhike joined halfway through.

Though they had the prestigious pre-season Vodacom Challenge in the bag the first official trophy delivered was the BP Top 8 which was won on September 1, 2002, followed by the Coca-Cola Cup in November following a 5-0 massacre of Jomo Cosmos.
