'We’re building the Netflix of high school education.” Meet the 2022 ForbesUnder30 honorees

says Felix Ruano, 26, the featured honoree on the. “A student anywhere in the world should be able to access any imaginable course, anytime, anywhere.” Ruano’s startup, Emile Learning, partners with high schools with sparse AP offerings and offers subscriptions to individuals for $10 a month.

Emile breaks down lessons into bingeable segments that run for under 10 minutes, tailored to modern kids’ attention spans. The son of Mexican immigrants, he grew up in Los Angeles where he attended public schools. He graduated from Harvard and worked at McKinsey before the pandemic hit. With millions of students stuck at home, he saw an opportunity to create a streaming service with high-quality education on demand and cofounded Emile with chief operating officer Michael Vilardo, who joins him as an Under 30 honoree, and former chief technology officer Jon Quiros. In the summer of 2021, he flew instructors to L.A. to film 20 accredited high school classes, including 10 AP courses.Another featured lister: Tán Ho, 29, cofounder of Milwaukee-based Fiveable. Together with CEO Amanda DoAmaral, in 2018 he started an online platform where students can share study guides for high school classes, hold virtual study sessions and ask and respond to questions. More than 8 million students have used the site’s content or participated in its live streams. Our third 2022 call-out: Jimmy McDermott, 22, cofounder of Transeo. After graduating high school in Hinsdale, Illinois, he teamed up with his school’s superintendent to start a challenger to college planning behemoth Naviance. Transeo tracks community service, job and internship opportunities and college prep, aiming to connect students with pathways that align with their interests. Another promising startup founded by our picks: Curious Cardinals, launched by Audrey Wisch, 20, and Alec Katz, 21. As freshmen at Stanford, Wisch and Katz began tutoring neighbors in their hometowns on subjects they were passionate about that aren’t taught in high school textbooks. In the summer of 2020 they decided to take a leave of absence to grow their tutoring business. By reaching out to student leaders at other colleges, they’ve created a network of more than 200 tutors whom they pay $40 to $60 per hour to teach courses to high schoolers on subjects like cryptocurrency and the future of aviation. Yet another innovative venture founded by an Education Under 30: BoldVoice, based in New York City. Cofounder Anada Lakra, 29, is an immigrant from Albania who attended Yale College and Harvard Business School. Given studies showing that a foreign accent can reduce one’s likelihood of being hired or promoted, she teamed up with Ilya Usorov, the son of Russian parents. BoldVoice helps non-native English speakers lose their accents using an app, priced at $15 per month.
