Parkin described Barassi as “a fantastic, passionate player who took control of games through sheer courage and that sort of thing, but I think he should be more remembered as a pioneer.”To illustrate the mechanics of how Barassi changed the game, Parkin recounted the meetings of coaches that the late coach organised to help improve the sport.
“It was Ronald Dale [Barassi’s] leadership. Nobody else. There were famous people in there, but it was Ron who led the way. He was a real pioneer and innovator in terms of where the game is now.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tributes to Barassi, saying there is no more famous name in football.AFL chairman Richard Goyder called him the game’s most important figure since World War II.
