As the Governor mentions in her proclamation, Alabama is now the fifth-largest generator of electricity derived from nuclear power in the entire country—not to mention the second-largest producer of hydroelectric power east of the Rockies. In fact, according to, hydroelectric facilities generated roughly 70% of our entire state’s renewable electricity generation in 2022.
Additionally, clean energy is an increasingly critical sector of our economy, already supporting roughly 44,000 jobs statewide, according to Governor Ivey’s proclamation. Continuing to make strategic, thoughtful investments in developing our clean energy resources and building out our clean energy infrastructure will enable us to keep creating much needed, 21st century jobs for hardworking Alabamans.
For Meta and other industry leaders across the spectrum of the U.S. economy, clean energy is no longer a want, but a necessity. That is why it is so critical that Alabama continues to invest in clean energy generation, production, and transmission—as well as the infrastructure necessary to support it. Doing so will help ensure our state is well poised to attract new businesses and industries that are committed just as much to growing the economy as they are to protecting the environment.
