How supporting sweeping workplace changes backfired when an efficiency expert showed no distinction between dedicated workers and actual “dead weight.”
You go to work every day, sometimes not feeling well, but you love your job, doing it for years and you are good at it, never getting a bad job review. You also know some co-workers aren’t as dedicated as you, calling in sick often and being paid for it, stealing supplies, talking about how bad management is and how they could do a lot better.
Then along comes an “efficiency professional,” and their job is to get rid of “dead weight” based on “extensive” investigations to root out the bad apples. This is good news to you personally but you don’t say anything. Deep down you feel it’s about time, you feel safe because you have a fantastic record, proving time and time again what a good employee you are. Then all of a sudden you’re told you are no longer needed and will be furloughed starting right now, to pack your things and get out, now, along with everybody there, both excellent and not-so-excellent workers. You had the wrong idea of what their definition of efficiency and investigation are. Understandably it’s hard for you to comprehend this.
