The average price of popular trading cards, handbags and Lego sets is skyrocketing as collectors fight it out online for prized possessions.

Shoppers may be curbing their spending in the cost-of-living crunch, but they’re happy to splash out on Lego, exclusive sneakers and designer handbags as they chase thousands of dollars in profit from collectibles.

Gen Z and Millennial shoppers were the most likely to buy collectibles, with half the shoppers surveyed in those age groups saying they participate in the hunt for prized goods. And while not making millions, a decent chunk of collectors surveyed by the e-commerce giant said they are coming out ahead, with the median profit on selling collectibles over the past few years between $5000 and $10,000.As one of the longest-running online marketplaces in the world, eBay has long been known as a place for shoppers to buy and sell all manner of goods for hobbies, including collecting.

A 1999 Pokemon Base Set Charizard 4/102 unlimited holo trading card was selling for $300 in 2019, and will now go for $2400 – a 790 per cent increase.
