The original track, released 15 years ago, mocked the immigrant experience and the American Dream, but the band rewrote it as a rallying cry for Bosnia-Herzegovina's national team. The new version, sung mostly in Bosnian, celebrates soccer's working-class roots and has amassed nearly 2 million YouTube views in less than three weeks, building on the original's 26 million. The music video was filmed in a Sarajevo neighborhood soccer playground, connecting the song to the everyday joy of the sport.
The band members were surprised when fans unfurled a banner with the new lyrics during a match, singing them as a spontaneous chant. Keyboardist Brano Jakubović notes that the song evolved from a satirical take on immigration into a football dream for the entire nation. The lyrics include inside jokes that resonate with Bosnians, such as referencing a contentious offside call against Nigeria in the 2014 World Cup, which Jakubović calls a 'national trauma.
' By rewriting the song, the band aims to release that collective pain and transform it into hope. The song's title reflects the literal journey of the Bosnian team, who will play matches in Canada and the United States, with their base camp in Sandy, Utah. For Bosnia, a country that endured war and ethnic division after independence in 1992, football has become a unifying force.
Jakubović explains that the World Cup brings people together in a way that rarely happens otherwise. Many players on the Bosnian team were born abroad to diaspora families who left during the war, embodying the immigrant story that the original song satirized. The updated anthem thus carries deep emotional weight, serving as both a celebration of sporting achievement and a reminder of the struggles and resilience of the Bosnian people.
