Billy Ray's account was initially met with skepticism, but when the family dog started behaving strangely, they discovered five alien beings with large pointed ears, big yellow eyes, and long arms. The creatures, seemingly unharmed by gunshots, terrorized the family for four hours before retreating to their spaceship and leaving. The encounter gained national attention, with police, press, and military investigating the scene, but no evidence was found.
While Spielberg never made 'Night Skies', he incorporated elements from the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter into 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial'.
