This TikTok star is a master of mesmerizing makeup transformations.
There’s a changing of the guard in fashion and culture. Gen Z creators are pushing the conversation forward in ways both awe-inspiring and audacious. Our latest project,
, invites you to discover how these artists, musicians, actors, designers, and models are radically reimagining the future.TikTok is like a kaleidoscopic acid trip. The colors are vivid. The shapes are abstract. The patterns are deep and layered. And all of these things come to life on Des’ree herself. She is her own canvas.
Born in the Ukraine and raised in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Msasi grew up with a knack for arts and crafts, one that ultimately translated into the wildly imaginative and deftly executed special effects makeup looks that have earned her a half a million followers and over 16 million likes on TikTok.
On average, one of Msasi’s looks takes 10 hours to paint during one sitting. But preparation is a days-long process, and typically goes something like this: Take a day or two to come up with an idea while scrolling Pinterest for hours searching for inspiration. Then, map out a rough sketch of her vision and spend a couple of days creating props before creation day.
Like many of her fellow Gen Z creators, Msasi credits the Internet and rise of social media for allowing her to not only teach herself how to do makeup, but create her own trajectory. “So much information is available at the tip of your fingers and with just a single search,” she says. “It’s encouraged me to DIY most things.
