as the main narrative thread, the new offering from the South Korean quintet takes on a much more somber, at times even cynical, approach thematically. Gone is unrealistic idealism, and in its place, a more pragmatic perspective. Sonically, however, TXT loves a contrast: lyrics about existential doom lurk beneath dance beats and cheery production.
Naming aside, it is not difficult to pinpoint why “0X1=LOVESONG ” is unlike any other TXT title track in other aspects. A by-the-book arena rock track, the song’s undeniably anthemic feel mixed with its heart-wrenching yet comforting lyrics and coming-of-age music video make for an instant winner. “In this world of zero, ‘you' are my one and only,” the members sing.
With a pop core, “0X1=LOVESONG ” highlights new layers of the members’ singing. Some standouts are Beomgyu’s and Yeonjun’s harmonies with Seori, as well as Taehyun’s newly-adept grungy, growly vocals to match Mod Sun’s trademark. They shine even brighter during the live version. Penned by the members, minus Soobin, “밸런스 게임” is a heavy-bass number, rife with gaming references that is – as made evident by its English title, “What if I had been that PUMA” – one big nod to's “PUMA.” Much like the dichotomies and dilemmas the song speaks about, it is perhaps the most polarizing song on the album. The track’s use of autotune is the very definition of potent. Like the song says, it’s fifty-fifty, and it might not hit with those who have a particular disdain for autotune.
