From coopers to luthiers, rare trades that are locked out of apprenticeship programs are leaving businesses without succession plans or extra staff to share the burden of work.
abc.net.au/news/endangered-trades-and-skills-at-risk-of-dying-out-in-australia/102721256When it came to deciding on a profession at the age of 15, David Schmeider settled on a little-known profession: cooper.
One of the world's longest-running professions, coopers build the barrels or casks used to mature wines and spirits like whiskey through a finely tuned process of stripping, toasting, charring and sealing."These distillers are sometimes holding thousands of dollars worth of spirits in these casks. You don't want to get to the end of maturation and lose it all to the floor."David began his apprenticeship as a cooper at the Bundaberg Rum Distillery in Queensland in the 1970s.
But with the closure of two of Tasmania's major cooperages in recent years, David is struggling to keep up with the demand."We service about 20 per cent of the whisky market here in Tasmania but the work is only increasing now that Master Cask is gone. Two of Tasmania's major cooperages have closed in recent years, with the Schmeider's struggling to keep up with demand.
