I’ve been covering the auto industry since 1989, first as CNN Detroit Bureau Chief, then as the National Auto Writer for the Associated Press, General Motors beat writer at the Detroit News and video reporter at Automotive News.

For about a decade Tiffany Heathcott and her husband were a team, driving big rigs, hauling cargo. Her husband eventually gave up the road life for a management position. Tiffany’s not behind the wheel anymore either, but she’s still a driver.in the United States to operate their autonomous electric transport commercial vehicles, or AETs, for its client GE Appliances in Tennessee.

Primarily based in Dallas, Texas, but soon to be transferred down to Austin, Heathcott will still be the human making sure those trucks hundreds of miles away run their routes safely, although from behind a console, rather than the drivers seat. But Einride’s general manager for autonomous technologies points to a time when a remote driver did assist a confused AET traveling between two warehouses in Gothenburg, Sweden on a snowy day.“There was quite a big snow pile next to the road, and the truck did not recognize what that was, and paused and basically went back to the remote operator to ask for assistance,” said Henrik Green in an interview.

A big part of increasing utilization is boosting not only the number of remote drivers, but the number of trucks monitored by each of them. To be considered for the job, Einride requires a commercial drivers license, actual experience driving a commercial truck and “on top of that, we're looking for people who are a bit creative, tech oriented, problem solving oriented, that can actually also assist our development,” Green said.
