Octavia's Bookshelf in Altadena transformed into a vital resource hub and healing space for the community after surviving the Eaton Fire. The bookstore owner, Nikki High, shares her experience of helping others and the unexpected resurgence of her book, 'Parable of the Sower', in the wake of the disaster.
Octavia's Bookshelf , an Altadena woman's bookstore, survived the Eaton Fire but was significantly transformed by the disaster, evolving into a vital resource hub and a healing haven for the community. Nikki High , the bookstore's owner, stated that while her home sustained considerable damage and remains uninhabitable, she felt compelled to help others who had suffered even greater losses. 'People showed up, then I thought maybe I should have food and water...
and that was the start of it,' High recalled. As more individuals sought assistance, Octavia's Bookshelf issued a community call for donations. The books were temporarily removed from the shelves, replaced with essential items like air purifiers. 'It felt really full circle to be able to help people who helped me open the business, stay in business,' High expressed. One of her works, 'Parable of the Sower', has gained renewed attention in the wake of the Eaton Fire. Some perceive its narrative as prophetic, depicting a Los Angeles ravaged by climate change, economic hardship, and an apocalyptic scenario. Published in 1993, the book contains an entry dated February 1, 2025, that reads, 'we had a fire today.'The bookstore has reopened, with customers eager to purchase copies of 'Parable of the Sower' and join the reading group. While books have returned to the shelves, Octavia's Bookshelf remains committed to giving back to the community. The store is stocking books that help children cope with disasters and provide guidance on family preparedness. A dedicated giveaway section offers free books, reading glasses, and other health and wellness items, including air purifiers, to evacuees in need.
