From the days of enterprise application integration and service-oriented architecture to the rise of REST and JSON APIs, each era promised seamless interoperability. Each one also revealed its limits, whether it was complexity, rigidity or the inability to adapt as business needs evolved. Today, we are on the brink of another shift. With the rise of agentic AI and open standards such as the Model Context Protocol , interoperability is no longer just about moving data between systems. It is about enabling intelligent collaboration between systems themselves and redefining how enterprises interact with their own digital ecosystems.Traditional APIs were designed for transactions: One service requests something from another and a response comes back. That paradigm worked well for the web and early cloud eras, but it assumes a static relationship in which systems “speak” only when asked. Agentic AI changes that. Instead of waiting for human-coded instructions, AI agents can proactively negotiate intent, retrieve knowledge and coordinate tasks. They understand context, not just commands. In this new environment, interoperability depends less on rigid contracts and more on shared semantics, metadata and policies. This is where MCP becomes transformative. Instead of defining a narrow set of API calls, MCP provides a shared protocol for how systems present capabilities, context and policies to one another. It allows applications to collaborate as intelligent participants in a workflow rather than passive endpoints. In effect, the network becomes adaptive—able to interpret intent, reason over available tools and coordinate tasks dynamically.Just as APIs made every company a software platform, AI-driven interoperability is turning every company into a graph company. That does not mean everyone needs to stand up a formal knowledge graph or an RDF triple store, but it does mean that every organization must express relationships between data, processes and decisions in a structured, machine-navigable way. Whether it is called a semantic index, a context mesh or a knowledge fabric, the goal is the same: to give AI systems the ability to understand how your business works. The companies that invest in contextual data modeling, the connective tissue between systems, will likely be the ones whose AI initiatives drive outcomes instead of isolated experiments.The enterprise landscape is increasingly distributed. Workloads running across clouds, edges and data centers must all cooperate in real time. Relying solely on static APIs or batch pipelines is no longer enough. A modern interoperability approach should embed semantic awareness, policy controls and latency-sensitive orchestration directly into the cloud fabric so enterprises can evolve from simply connecting systems to coordinating intelligence.Moving beyond raw tables to represent entities, relationships and contextDefining what AI should and should not access, under what policies and with full traceabilityAccepting that new data fields, formats and sources will appear constantly, as well as adapting in real timeEnsuring that intelligent agents operate at the speed of decision making, not batch processingWe have been here before, and history offers some guidance. EAI failed under its own complexity. SOA was over-standardized before real use cases existed. REST succeeded because it put developers and simplicity first. For MCP and agentic AI to thrive, the same principle applies: Avoid over-engineering and let adoption shape the standards. The companies that succeed will not chase buzzwords. They will build flexible systems that meet people where they are.Just as REST became table stakes for participating in the cloud, I believe MCP-style interoperability will soon be table stakes for participating in the AI economy. SaaS vendors that do not expose structured, AI-ready context may increasingly be excluded from intelligent workflows. Systems that cannot share semantics, not just data, will simply be invisible to the agents orchestrating enterprise operations. Meanwhile, data catalog and graph technology vendors have an opportunity to evolve from passive repositories to active participants in agentic ecosystems.Building The Next Generation Of Data Leaders This evolution also demands new kinds of leadership. The data leaders of tomorrow will need more than SQL expertise or pipeline design skills. They will need to think in graphs, govern context responsibly and blend technical literacy with policy awareness. Additionally, these leaders will need the humility to learn from the cycles that came before and the curiosity to experiment in a space that is still taking shape. The real test of a data leader’s readiness will be their ability to expose their company’s data and workflows to AI agents in a way that preserves trust, compliance and adaptability.The future of interoperability is not about connecting endpoints. It is about connecting intelligence. It is a shift from data as a static asset to data as an active conversation that defines how your business participates in the AI economy. As the boundaries between systems blur, success will hinge on one thing: your ability to make your data not just available, but intelligible. That is the promise and the challenge of the next era of enterprise technology.
