PETALING JAYA: Reigning All-England women’s singles champion Tai Tzu-ying has been floored by a teenager. The shuttler is in quarantine after a young team member was tested positive for Covid-19, sparking concerns at all other participating teams.
The All-England that ended on March 11 at Arena Biringham went on as scheduled, despite calls by players for the Badminton World Federation to have it postponed.
A few players, including Han Kristian Vittinghus and Mads Conrad-Petersen of Denmark and Saina Nehwal of India, have taken a swipe at the world body for putting the players at risk.“So a Taiwanese athlete who was in Spain at the time of the Barcelona Masters, in Germany the following week and then in England during the time of All-England – has tested positive for Covid-19 after returning home.”
The affected member is said to be a young sparring partner, who had travelled with the team to England. He trained with the team and was in the shuttle van used to transport all players from their hotel to the venue. Saina, who crashed out in the first round of the prestigious US$1.1mil meet, also took a dig at the organisers and the world body in her Twitter account.
